Gareth 'pots' his way to record third World Title glory

Golden boy Gareth Potts was on top of the world after claiming a record breaking third Foster’s World 8-Ball Pool Championship title. The Stoke on Trent potter defeated England rival Jason Twist 11-4 to lift the trophy for a third time in four years. In doing he broke the ‘Blackpool bogey’, becoming the only player in the 17-years of the championship to retain his title. And veteran Twist tipped the Staffordshire cueman for even greater glory. “I’m sure Gareth is going to win it many more times in the future,” said the ‘Tornado’ becalmed almost from the start of a final that didn’t live upto its pre match billing. Lynette 'spins' her way to World Title

Lynette Horsburgh was higher than Blackpool Tower in her home town after becoming Foster’s World 8-Ball Pool ladies singles champion. The 34-year-old Fylde star survived a late attack of nerves to beat fellow first time finalist Barbara Taylor 8-6 at the Imperial Hotel. Mum Anne, boyfriend Karl Boyes and deposed champion Sue Thompson were among the first people to congratulate the Lancashire pool queen. “I’m just so glad it didn’t go to a decider,” gasped Horsburgh after collecting the £1,400 winners’ cheque. “At 7-4 up I was quite comfortable and should have won 8-4. “But I missed my chance and then I started to lash at a few.” Horsburgh actually potted the black only to see the cue ball drop in as well. In the next frame she had more chances on the black but again Taylor rode her luck. Indeed, the England international, who, earlier in the day, helped her country regain the ladies’ team title, should have taken the final to hill-hill. But she wasted two visits after Horsburgh failed to escape a snooker but couldn’t take advantage. In the end, Horsburgh, twice runner-up in the world ladies snooker championship, sank an easy black for the title. “This has got to be my best achievement,” she said. “Especially as I am still learning the game. “I think I still need a few fudging lessons from Keith Brewer!..
